As I was enjoying my fried catfish and turnip greens, Jamie dug into his baked chicken and fried okra. The couple next to us were commenting how tender the chicken was, which of course sparked a conversation in the dining room. I just love the South...we never meet a stranger!<br /><br />The couple sitting next to the door were about to order and were very interested in our opinions of the food and what we thought they should order. For $10 per person, there is always a choice between 2 or 3 meats, choice of 3 vegetables served with cornbread and dessert. You get to pick from what Mrs. Christine has cooked that day, so the menu is never the same. As we gave our opinions on the chicken, catfish, bread pudding and an explanation of what 'rancho beans' are, I snuck in the obligatory, 'where're y'all from' question.<br /><br />It turns out the couple next to the door were from West Tennessee on their way to New Orleans. She had googled 'home cooking-soul food' restaruants located on the way between their two points of travel and found Christine's Back Porch-Canton! I googled the restaurant to see what the net has to say about the food. "It gives you the southern feel of being at home and enjoying traditional soul food cooking." It certainly lives up to that reputation! I got the prized bread pudding recipe from the lady sitting next to us that day while enjoying my food and conversation with the folks from Memphis.<br /><br />This couple found a treasure indeed in this quaint old house where Mrs. Christine serves her traditional Southern soul food! CMPPD is assembling this in a user-friendly, mapping format that will be hosted on a website. The site will be interactive, and users will be able to go to the site and find available land and properties and have all the spec’s right there. We will provide a link to the site from the chamber website.<br /><br />The Chamber's role will be to provide our members with an avenue to list their properties, help coordinate promotion, and facilitate use. This has the potential to be a powerful tool for us to promote growth within the city, because the goal will be to assemble in one location much of the information that someone trying to locate a business or new development needs, thereby allowing them to bypass much of the bureaucratic red-tape one encounters in such an endeavor. There are some exciting things happening there, including the roll out of their first commercial vehicle to be manuafactured in the USA. Outside of overseas locations, Canton will be the only plant this new vehicle will be made. <br /><br />They have recently done some expansions there as well. If you have never toured the plant you need to try and do it. What a GREAT business after hours Tuesday nite hosted by Montgomery, McGraw, Collins, O'Cain, and Coleman! The event was held at the Country Club of Canton and catered by Debbie Davidson. As usual, the food was terrific and Grady Champion kept the crowd entertained with his engaging style and extraordinary talent. It was great to see Grady again and have him back after the wonderful performance he did for us at the annual Chamber banquet. That guy may have a future in this bsuiness!<br /><br />There wera also some fun door prizes and the money-tree drawing was a nice sum of $60. The orizes were won by David Richards, Jones Cleaners, and Hurstine Watts. <br /><br />We want to thank everyone for coming out Canton Chamber Business After Hours Tuesday night. The turnout was wonderful and I think all had a great time and we hope to see everyone again soon. We are again grateful to Bob Montgomery and the gang at MMCOC.
